The Future of Squash

The old image of squash?
Maybe we should say
the "current" image of squash.

The truth is that whilst the modern game of squash has actually moved on massively in the last 20 years, the image of the game to the man in the street hasn't moved an inch.

 The Old Image

This section of the web site is the anti-sell, there is no point in pretending that sponsoring squash is like sponsoring tennis or other mainstream TV sports because right now there is a big difference.

To read what's good about squash and how Reverse Angle is going to utilise that along with a new approach to presenting the game then proceed to the new image section of the site.

Extensive market research shows that the general public have very little knowledge of the modern game, if you ask one hundred passers by "who is the current world number one in squash in the men's game?" you are more likely to be furnished with the reply...."Khan is it?" than an educated guess on the movement at the top of the squash charts. Sadly if you ask about the women's game you are lucky to even get an answer. Since the dominance of the Khan's in the 80's, the game has been dominated for almost a decade by Britain's very own Peter Nicol, but in spite of this, Pete is not a household name.

The two players at the top of the page to the right of the Reverse Angle logo are the current world number 1's in the men's and women's game, can you name them? If you are a squash enthusiast then you would hope so, but we showed these pictures to 100 club level squash players at ten different squash clubs and only just over 50% knew who they were. The public love sports stars but squash does not have a Beckham or Tiger Woods, the ingredients are there for sure, but that you can read about that in the new image.

Squash's image problem is not only with the perception of how the game is played, but also of the types of people who play the game. Squash is still seen as a sport that is played by middle aged businessmen in danger of a heart attack who look better in a suit than they do in tight white shorts and waving a wooden racket.

Remember, the point of this section of the site is to tell the truth, we are more than aware that most of the myths and perceptions of the game are not true, but in business it's about what sells, change the perception and then you have your vehicle

Squash doesn't work on TV, the truth is that television technology has moved into a realm of high resolution and the digital age and as you will read in the new image area squash is in fact great on TV, it is the perception that is out of date.

BUT! even with acquisition of the latest viewing equipment along with 9 zillion channels I can't view squash, why? the answer is, because it is rarely on TV and when it is on, it is normally a highlights package and never an entire match for the viewer to have time to understand the game, and start building a rapport with the stars of the professional game.

So, have we missed anything? Is there anything else we can have a pop at while we are laying the game bare? We could go into the massive demise of squash courts facilities around the world at the mercy of ever expanding health clubs, we could talk about the underselling of the game, the "who will volunteer", "please will you help our cause " and negative approach to attracting sponsors.....but no, now it's time to read about what's good, what's good about the things that are bad and the fantastic team of people in the game that are already in place to make a reality the New Image of Squash
